How to Expertly Mix Vocals

I created a course that gives you small, bite-size steps for mixing vocals. I show you in real time what I'm doing, what to listen for, and how to fix issues. With my step-by-step process, you will work faster, more efficient, and get better results when you mix. The order of the vocal processing is designed in a very specific way. This order is designed to:

  • Save you time
  • Build on the previous process/plugin.
  • Help you hear issues more easily
  • Work in any style of music
  • Work with any style of vocalist

I always build on the previous concept.

For example in Lesson 1 - Compression will allow us to hear what's going on, and keep the vocal consistent. Without compression on a vocal, it might be hard to hear that a low-mid frequency is an issue against other tracks in the song. In Lesson 5 we cover De-essing, then we follow it with vocal editing. Again, the lessons build on each other, and if we can't take care of troublesome sibilance, then we then edit the vocals. If we start with editing, then we are just creating more work for ourselves that might have been solved with a stock DAW plugin. In Lesson 7 we learn about vocal tuning, but it's only needed if we first couldn't fix the issue with Vocal Layering that came before it. The order has a purpose ...and it's designed to teach you How to Expertly Mix Vocals.

I teach on a variety of songs and styles

In this course, I used a new song for just about every lesson. There are some repeats, but there are many different vocal styles and genres in the course.

I use Plugins and Outboard

I have a camera over my desk and I use a mix of plugins and outboard. It's a seamless process between both worlds. You don't need hardware to get great results, but the hardware is easier to teach with. I can move multiple knobs at once, and show more extreme ranges of what the processing can do. Furthermore, I go right into the plugins and show if there is much of a difference. Sometimes there is, but most of the time I'm able to dial in the same results using a stock DAW plugin.

Another Vocal Mixing Course?

This course is different from my course with Mixerman, How to Mix Vocals That'll Make a Grown Man Cry. With Mixerman, we taught similar concepts but in a circular approach. Mixerman was a guest teacher, and we learned his personal approaches. This course is more directional, step-by-step, and systematic. The order of my mixing steps is designed to save you time. For instance, compression comes first because it helps expose issues the vocal has against other tracks in the song. We then know exactly how to use reductive EQ, and compression also highlights any sibilance issues that will be problematic. Another example is that we cover vocal editing after de-essing. Why edit "S" and "Ch" sounds by hand when a plugin can do it? We first try it with plugins, and then what's we spend time fixing by hand.
